Modern Batik Movement Wins 1st Place!
October 6th, 2010 by Agincourt Community Services Association

In the summer of 2010, a group of 12 female high school students participated in a Modern Batik workshop – Train the Trainer Program. Following the completion of this workshop, eight of the participants were interested in exploring their creativity beyond the workshop, and decided to begin the development of a social enterprise to profit from their artwork and to provide therapeutic art education in the Steeles / L’Amoreaux community.

A key need identified by ACSA Youth Outreach Workers’ (YOW) was the lack of experience and knowledge about entrepreneurship among the youth. Based on this need, the YOWs referred a couple of the youth to the Scarborough East Newcommer Youth Entrepreneurship Training Program. This program was conducted over 9 weeks, and provided the necessary skills and tools for the members of this group to develop a business plan and create their organization named Modern Batik Movement.

Following the end of the entrepreneurship training program, each participant was required to submit and present their business plan to a panel of five prominent business managers from the community. Based on the participant’s presentation and plan, the managers would judge who had the best plan among one another.

On Saturday, September 25th, the panel of judges decided that the two participants from Modern Batik Movement – Stephanie Sing and Alice Guo – presented and wrote the BEST business. They were awarded first prize and $500 as seed money to begin their business!

Congratulations to both of the participants and the rest of the youth on Modern Batik Movement!
